Before ever trying to start an old bike, it's essential to verify you won't suck garbage into the engine. Remove the air box, and you will need to clean and verify the carb(s) are working
Starting an old bike has a few risks. One is the oiling system, you want to make sure you are pumping oil. Verifying your electrical ground is clean without resistance.

I had to remove the primary cover and set some things right that were assembled incorrectly by the PO. Of course this required I change the primary oil too.
